• Heirloom tomatoes are big on flavor and color, but less resistant to disease and more irregularly shaped than bred-for-perfection hybrid varieties. "Giant Belgium" is a pink heirloom that produces sandwich-sized fruits from 1 to 2 pounds each that are low-acid and sweet, if a bit lumpy and green at the shoulders. Because this cultivar has a longer growing season than some other heirlooms -- up to 90 days -- it is not suitable for cool, foggy microclimates.
