• Clemson Spineless’ was an All-America Selections winner in 1939, and has remained a favorite ever since. Plants reach a height of about four feet, and spread up to 48 inches in diameter. Early to mature, this heirloom is ready for harvest in 55-60 days. Virtually spineless, slightly curved dark green pods may reach nine inches in length. Okra adds body and flavor to soups, stews, and relishes, and can be grilled, braised, steamed, and sautéed. Garden Hint: Soak seed in warm water overnight to speed germination. Pick pods when young at 2½–3" long.
• How to Sow
• 1. Sow okra seeds in full sun and average, well-worked soil after danger of frost. Before planting the seeds, soak them overnight to encourage faster germination.
• 2. Grow okra in a different place every year to avoid problems with pests and diseases.
• 3. Plant 3-4 seeds every 12 inches in rows 36 inches apart. Cover with 1 inch of fine soil. Keep them 80-90 degrees F until Germination. Thin to the strongest plant by cutting off the rest.
• 4. Seedlings should emerge in 14-21 days.
• How to grow.
• When the seedling reach a height 4 inches, apply mulch to conserve moisture and control weeds. Keep the plants moist during dry weather. In cooler climates, it may be necessary to apply black plastic or provide row covers for adequate heat.
